Bishop John was born in Somerset into family of a priest, Fr Bill Goddard. They lived in such diverse places as the UPA parish of the old St Paul’s District of Bristol and Guildford. Bishop John is married to Vivienne and has two sons, Michael and Gareth. He studied theology at Durham. Ordained to curacy in Southbank, Middlesbrough, in the Diocese of York, he went on to a second curacy at Scarborough. His first incumbency was in a large housing estate parish, the Ascension Middlesbrough. From there he went on to the inner city parish of All Saints, Middlesbrough, where he became Area Dean of the town. He moved in 1988 to become Vice-Principal of Edinburgh Theological College in the Scottish Episcopal Church. After that he became the Rector of the team parish of Ribbleton (UPA) in Lancashire. In 2000 he was as Bishop of Burnley in 2000. He is the Advisor on prison ministry and Archbishop’s Advisor on interfaith matters in the Northern Province.
