Bishop Philip North was born in London and studied history at the University of York. He trained for the priesthood at St Stephen's House in Oxford and then, feeling a strong sense of call to urban ministry, served as Curate in the Parish of St Mary and St Peter on the edge of Sunderland. After a four year curacy he was made Vicar of Holy Trinity Hartlepool and served for a while as Area Dean of Hartlepool. In 2002 he moved south to become Priest Administrator of the Shrine of Our Lady of Walsingham in the Diocese of Norwich, caring for the thousands of pilgrims who make their way to the Shrine each year and continuing a major programme of regeneration of the grounds and buildings. After this he moved to London to become Team Rector of the Parish of Old St Pancras, overseeing the work of four Churches in and around Camden Town. He has served on General Synod and on the Liturgical Commission and is a member of the Archbishops' Task Group on Intentional Evangelism.
